It may work but since they are herbal products, it may require time to really see effect. you can't expect to loose 7 pounds in 7 days or such miracles.

Thanks for this interesting and useful information. This really raises awareness so even if people can't buy organic they can still purchase the best of the non-organic and take simple steps like washing fruit and vegetables

This is very interesting info Richard! Do you know if Tai Chi has the same effects on the body? Yoga is one of those things where you need a trained professional, so I would definitely consider it depending on whats available. Thank you for the info!

I first met Lisanne around four years ago when she was recomended to me by a mutual friend, at that time l was an absolute physical wreck, who for years had been suffering from gluten intolerence without knowing it, My G.P had been treating me for dairy intolerence, and a number of unexplained viruses through out my adult life, all to no avail, it was only when l had the good fortune of meeting Lisanne ,that l finally knew what had been making me feel so wretched in all those years of suffering, and in a few short weeks my life had completely turned around, since then l have never looked back, l have so much to thank her for, she is truely an amazing person.

All these people are worthy of all of us voting for because of the care and expertise they show and have in their field of excellence.

I myself feel Pippa Shey is the best candidate for this public vote as she helped me change my life when I thought nothing or no one could, not even myself!

LOL, i am really wondering if hormones like "Oxytocin" released just when we hug?? There should be hormones which may release during activities like kiss and...!

I don't know if that's really possible. It does clearly mean our emotions are directly related to those hormones and release of them.

Love the hug philosophy, and actually know that hugs have power !
Human beings are meant to connect, and a hug can make the difference between feeling isolated and included.
Like Pippa, I share many hugs with my clients, it's kind of organic and often like a 'thank you and take care'.
I wonder what would happen if doctors hugged their patients.....maybe more well people and less stressed doctors?
(My daughter worked it out for herself at age 14, and told me that she needed 3 hugs a day as the bottom line; she's now almost 27 and the hugs flow, and if not in person by email, text and notes. She hugs her friends all the time, and what a supportive bunch of friends she's got.)
So feel the power, and hug more!

Interesting information here. Back in the day my parents used to make us drink organic non-pasteurized milk and I couldn't stand it. I've always wondered if organic food was that much better for you. Thanks for your post, I'll have to show my parents.

Hey Pippa,

Thanks for your comment!

I cant actually take responsibility for the hug coupon, that was Sue Baldwin's creation from the Yoga Room in Witney. And true to her word, she gave me a nice big hug yesterday ;)

Not sure I could make it to 12 a day, but I guess there's a challenge for me :)

We need 4 hugs a day to survive and 12 to thrive!
It's very rare, and only if the client doesn't want it, that we don't have a hug at the end of the session and often at the beginning too.
This morning I had hugs from a cool 21 year old male client who is well over 6 feet tall. As I'm only 5'2'' this always makes us laugh. He once picked me up so I was the same height.
Hugging and cuddling are so important and I've also seen the results of a lack of this in another client recently.
And the really lovely thing is that it's very hard to give a hug without getting one back!
Love your hug coupons Richard!

I wish it was true, but I have been a vegetarian for nearly 20 years and am over weight. I like the taste of food and eat too much. An underactive, unstable thyroid doesn't help either!

I had read that people who eat porridge regularly, all other things being equal, live longer than those who don't.

The research I read did not specify that the porridge had to be oats porridge; all my life, I have enjoyed porridge made variously from oats, wheat, maize (corn) and sorghum. Yum yum!

I agree that the government should help to make healthy food cheaper. If they would only see that the savings in health care that would be saved if people eat healthy foods instead of junk foods maybe they will do something about it.

I am a bit of a veggie, but I also drink beer - a veggie product if ever there was one! Sadly this means that, whatever I eat, I get fatter!

No i could not go veggie. And i do not think that going veggie is the key of losing weight. If you eat a lot of carbs and do not excercise you still get fat. It is not because of the meat.

I think it's fine to make available some items, like sports drinks and soups. After a lot of exercise you might need something. But maybe chocolate bars and crisps are not such a good idea.

I own a small artisan soft drinks company, and my aim is to make products that people could make in their own kitchen if they had the time or desire to do so.

This means that I only use 'real' ingredients, and that causes problems as produce is expensive. Chemicals are relatively cheap and inexpensive, additives and flavour enhancers can bulk out flavours, but people don't want them. But the real test is when you ask them to pay for a product that doesn't contain them, and generally this is the point that you see them change their minds or put their mmdw where their mouth is (pun intended). Honestly, some people are fickle, some aren't but the retailers and restaurants don't believe that there are enough out there to make a product such as mine profitable to them.

The irony is that it can be, and indeed IS profitable to stock a product such as mine, and others, but you the consumer have to tell the retailer/restaurant that that is what you want - it is the consumer who holds all the cards.

Kris, if you're worried about what you eat, the best bet is to see a dietary expert such as a nutritionist or dietician.

However, the important thing is that your body gets most of its energy from oxygen (so breathe well, from your stomach); more energy from water (so drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise); and from good quality food.

Good quality food includes fruit, vegetables, pulses, carbohydrates (unrefined, so avoid white pasta, white rice, white bread), nuts, and small amounts of fish and chicken. But, as I said, see a dietary expert, who can tailor your diet to your particular needs.

To answer your question: Your body will tell you when it is hungry. Learn to listen to it, feed it when it is hungry, and stop when it is no longer hungry.

Hello, good article,

So what's the best thing to do? Exercise and eat as you normally would? Or make sure you eat more protein? Or do weight exercise as well as aerobic to regain the muscle you would lose?

Thanks.

To be healthy, it;s not a big deal to be veggie. But what will be the guarantee that it's helps me in weight loss. There are so many overweight vegetarian peoples are also around the world :). What would be your suggestion for them.

Hi,
As a chef I find that this issue of cheap healthy food creates confusion. Cheap generally means poor quality which is not always true. It would be great to think that the government can make a change but I think we have got to make changes in the kitchen before we can ask for legislation etc.

I am experimenting with cheaper cuts of meat, using more local produce i.e. veg, fruit etc where possible to create dishes that are healthy and inexpensive. I have changed all of my cooking to produce gluten free, dairy free unless the recipe needs non-gluten free flour etc. So all of my dishes are typically cooked using cold pressed oils (rapeseed or sunflower) which are high in Omega 3 etc. I am also looking at a range of dishes that would support a lower cholesterol diet.

With care and time selecting good quality ingredients that do not cost a fortune and provide nutrition and support a healthy diet become part of a routine. But it has to be in conjunction with exercise to ensure that the body balances calories in and out.

With the cost of transporting food and the cost of growing food increasing we are going to be forced into looking more locally for our food and returning to the more seasonal foods as well. This will impact cost and availability of ingredients. What we should be looking for in sustainable food sources - veg, meat etc. As these are closer to home the costs should decrease and with the quality of the produce the cost per person/weight is likely to be cheaper than a similar product flown in from 5000 miles away.

If people are minded to demand cheaper but healthier food the retailers will respond, which will take time. I understand that the convenience of getting a frozen ready meal out of the cabinet is tempting and so much easier. In the meantime, education and building confidence in food and how to prepare and cook it, I believe, will enable people to make that enlightened choice about the food they buy.

I really like the Make Healthy Food Cheaper campaign. I do not support a Fat Tax being introduced due to the complexity of some fats being beneficial, some foods that are high in fat also having high levels of other nutrients etc. However I do support making healthy foods cheaper, relative to non healthy foods. It may be a case of banning such discounted offers on confectionery, like has happened on certain types of alcohol. Whatever the solution, I support the issue being debated and applaud your efforts

I've been setting small goals for myself, such as cutting back to two sodas a week, taking a walk at least three times a week, and eating more veggies. Little things like that have been easy to work in, because they don't take a lot of change. But I'm seeing improvement in my waistline and energy levels!

Also, I think it is important to consider not only who you ARE involving in your workout routine, but also who you AREN'T. I have a "friend" who always manages to nay-say. I'd say, "I'm looking forward to dropping 20 pounds." Her response is "Well I have 70 to drop. Like that's going to happen." It took me awhile to realize that she was always shooting down every positive change I brought up, although not directly. So now I don't talk to her about my fitness! I just do it! Don't let anyone drag down your plans.

Hello Tracey,
Good on you for not turning the offer down. It's hard to start doing these things but the trick is to make it a habit then it's hard to stop.
I find running in the rain is the best weather, keeps you cool and washes the sweat off!
Thanks,

Hello Richard,
Good interview. I have a mentor which is similar kind of thing to a performance coach I guess. I think everyone should have someone like this to help them professionally it is one of the most valuable assetts you can have in my opinion.
Many thanks,

Hi,

I think I might just buy this! I've been eating 8-10 fruit and vegetables a day for around 4 years, and ever since I started I've had a feeling of physical wellness. I physically feel good! It'd be nice to read something of the science behind that.

Thanks!

Hi,

You're right. I think this is about the single most significant thing that can be done to encourage healthy eating. But then if cheap healthy food were profitable it'd already be available in supermarkets. Hmm. If it comes down to the Coalition versus the supermarkets I'm not sure I'd like to guess which one'll come out tops.

Thanks!

HI,

Hmm. I'm not sure studies like this are that persuasive in changing people's minds. Everyone knows that eating fruits and vegetables is healthy, and I doubt another piece of evidence proving the point will change anyone's attitude. That said I suppose the study isn't aiming to persuade people. It's merely seeking a causation.

Thanks!

Hi Jillian,

I am sorry you feel that way, I was just trying to get across the small point that for health reasons, such as when you need to diet simply for medical reasons it is acceptable. It's trying to strike that fine balance between promoting body confidence and higher self esteem but also respecting the need for medical reasoned loss.

When i was writing it i strangely debated about whether or not to include that paragraph within this article. But i felt it important to respect the fact that it is sometimes necessary for those very reasons mentioned above. Perhaps it could have been worded better!

As a body confidence and eating disorder campaigner we often have to be so careful about the way we say things and while trying to promote our causes at the same time we do not want to give the "absolutely no" approach as we all appreciate that there are times such as medical reasons when such measures are necessary. What we promote is the abolishment of reckless weight loss, excessive dieting and exercise or carrying out those behaviours to deal with emotional difficulties as well as the portrayal of body image in the media and other medians.

Regardless of the above thank you for your feedback, it is always appreciated and if anything makes me grow in the way i approach and do things.

I'm thoroughly convinced smoking is the worst thing you can do to your body. Even if you give up with decades of your life left it'll still get you in the end, the damage has been done.

I find it amazing how my body starts to crave healthy food if I eat too much rubbish. If I just "listen" to my body it usually tells me what it needs. Just have to try hard not to ignore it and have a Mars bar instead.

With all due respect, I don't think that it's appropriate to mention weight loss in an article that appears to be promoting body acceptance and Health at Every Size. I would have appreciated this article much more if you had left out that paragraph.

What a great overview of osteopathy.
For the record, Monica is an outstanding osteopath, knows her stuff extremely well and has the rare ability to understand just how a patient got to be the way they are, rather than just looking at you as a biological machine.

I think your point is well made, and yes 90% is probably nearer the mark. I'm at that self-loathing stage. I'm as heavy as I was when pregnant (and that was over 21 years ago) and yet feeling so negative about my weight makes me eat/drink even more. I know the science, I understand the psychology and yet it makes no difference at all. It seems motivation is what I'm lacking and I'm not entirely sure how to crack that.

I walk a lot ever since I had my cancer scare ten years back. I was told that I must walk until I'm breathless and then walk a bit faster and then slow down - a bit like interval training I guess. It certainly lowered my heart rate and helped me with high blood pressure too. I find it de-stresses me to walk in nature and I try to get to Witney Lake or Blenheim at least twice a week in between other walks.... like to town and back. We live in a beautiful part of the country so walking is a pleasure!

Having a goal is the most important motivational tool, imagining yourself with a brighter future sure makes you feel like going for it. And like you said having a partner (especially one that is in a better shape and takes exercise seriously) will make you feel ashamed of yourself for letting him down.

Apart from being a useful prompt to widen the variety of food in your diet, eating just a little less meat also saves quite a lot of money. For those people who are interested in animal welfare but think that higher welfare meat cuts are too expensive to afford all the time, cutting out one or two meat meals a week can give you the extra few pennies to afford meat that you feel more comfortable with on the days you do eat it.

There is a growing movement online to get people to eat just one or two veggie days a week. If you google 'meat less monday' or 'meat free monday' you can find quite a few websites and tweeters posting great ideas for omnivores who want to try out vegetarian meals. With some ideas to copy you'll be less likely to buy processed vegetarian food, which can often be just as fatty and calorific as processed meats.

To be healthy it's necessary to avoid overeating plus to be veggie. But it's very difficult to be veggie for regular two or three day period for peoples like me. I think "liposuction" is the best way for us to reduce weight. Thanks to technology which allows me to eat and think freely.

I think that almost anybody could do it for a week. If you tried to do it long term, though, it would definitely take a little more research to make sure you were still getting all the proteins and things your body needs.

I have found walking to be the most effective means of combatting the stress reactive depression that I am prone to.
If I do even half an hour of walking I feel calmer, more positive and have a sense of well-being knowing that I have done something really good for my physical and mental health. I love the sense of connection I feel with my local community or the landscape as I move through it at the pace I am built for. And it's free !

Interesting challenge, huh? I am not a vegetarian but I love eating veggies. Besides that it is nutritious food, it was also the cheaper one. Perhaps that was reason why I feel and look sexy. I don't have fats on my belly though I am not doing any habitual exercise. I think I agree with the saying that says, "you are what you eat". -kyle

Hi!

Nice post Tracy. However, I disagree: feeling good about ones self is 90% of the battle. Speaking as someone with a lot of experience of not feeling good about myself, I can feel confident in saying that the better one's self image is, the easier it is to look after oneself. Consider this, if you have a car, and you hated it, would you bother washing and polishing it?

Best wishes - AJ

Hi there,
I 've been looking into this subject recently and have come across something called "Mindfulness based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy" and was wondering how that differed from MBCT.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated,

i eat veggie for most of the week i tried full time but i like my sunday lunches as i have no ethical reasons for being veggie it is know problem to me now since adopting this lifestyle i have found my energy levels are up i feelbetter in myself and stronger but the main thing i discovered is watching what you substitute your protien for. When i first tried it i was eating a lot of dairy prouducts cheese, yoghurts, and other high fat substitutes and i found instead of losing weight i was gaining. Go i greatly reduced my dairy intake and tried other sources of protien and found this benifical.

I will be changing my routine of coffee in the morning when I get to the office after reading this. Thanks Richard. I was always aware of the restorative properties of green tea, and as I am about to set out on a 'reboot, renew, recharge' programme, green tea sounds perfect!

I want to help little girl as I am member of Anthony Nolan from last 5 years. Unfortunately, I never heard back from them even once. Probably they did not find any match. I wish I will help somebody in some way. I wish and hope that little baby girl will be fine in future. All the best.

If I was young enough I'd be registering to help.
Please, if you're under 40 and over 18 do have a think about this. You could help to save the life of Amber or another person urgently in need.
And just how amazing will you feel knowing your life has made such a huge difference?

Very interesting article Mark. Reading this, Mindfulness seems to have a similar feel to the Sedona Method where you welcome a feeling and then release it.
You've sparked an interest for me to find out more so thank you.

I am thinking differently. Had anyone of you ever wonder how to meet the demand of world population. I guess no. Current world population is above 6 billion. The question is, are we creating enough fresh food to feed world population? Still I guess no. Infact, I believe, this is the idea behind processed food.

I think alot research need to be done in this area. How many of universities offering research (PHD) degrees in processed food science? Although there are universities offering degree in food science. I was checking this old resouce of ranking in food science in the UK.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/displayPopup/0,,13412,00.html

Oxford and Cambridge was not in the list. Only few Russell Group Universities are offering degrees in food sciences.

Without good education, these problems will not be solved.

I urge PM and Deputy PM to take action now and help people to spread the message of awareness against processed food.

All the best.

I've suffered with extremely high blood pressure since my early 20's. I'm told it's heriditary but I do notice an increase when ever I stray into the high carbs zone!! If I cut the carbs and stick to protein and veg/fruit with a little fat it lowers quite quickly! Exercise is a must as well though. Thanks for the tips and keep it coming!

I too agree with Muhammad that healing is not for everyone, but it should at least be given it's own space for discussion and debate.

There are several methods that Mr. Ginsburg practices that I have only a passing knowledge in (via my own curiousities in trying to learn how to better myself and my world), like Gestalt Therapy, Reiki and Craniosacral Therapy. As Robert says, that if his patients do report feeling more positive about themselves and their environment, then clearly his clients are happy with his work.

I agree that life is all about taking risks, however not every risk comes with a rewards, but if more Oxonians are feeling positive about themselves, this ought to be celebrated.

Like all things Tracey it is a matter of being fully prepared mentally and physically for your challenge. After all we don't just go out and climb kilimanjaro, without putting in mental and physical training. We would have the right mental attitude and above all we would have supporters egging us, encouraging us every step of the way.
1. Write up a juicy empowering statement of how you want to feel, look and all of the benefits. Write it in the present moment. Eg. " I feel fantastic, fit, agile, healthy, my skin is glowing. when I look in the mirror I feel satisfied at how the weight is dropping off.

2. Avoid and I mean avoid foods that make you feel bloated, tired, stodgy . As we grow older we develop a negative reaction to certain foods, which builds up a host of unhealthy bacteria and yeast. Making us feel bloated and look bloated. Invest in some sessions with a naturopath or nutritionist.

3. I swear by food combining and the weight dropped off and has stayed of.

4. Regular varied exercise on a daily basis- keeps you fit, feel good endorphins are released and you become more creative, focused and on top of the weight reduction.

5. Have a mentor/friend to whom you are accountable to, someone who will not let you off the hook, rather whom is supportive and firm.

6. be easy on yourself- self disgust is not helpful. That great body of yours will respond much more easily if it feels loved and nurtured. Give it unconditional love like you would a small child.

7. Make friends with your subby ie. the more you talk to yourself in an encouraging way the more supported your subconscious feels rather than being denied and punished.

8. Belive that it is going to be much easier than you think and that you have loads of willpower.

If you want a telephone mentor, happy to oblige.

Heres to a happy healthy, slimmer you Tracey.

I agree with Robert. There are people, whose personalities are so inspiring that one can leave his/her profession and adopt their profession. Robert adopted, healing profession after meeting some inspiring people, which I believe is very rare and unique. People like Robert should be given chance to come and present their point of view in public.

I wish Robert a Happy New Year and I hope he will do something for people of Oxford in 2011.

All the best.

I have been hearing rumour about this service for a long time and it is great that Oxon Mind and restore have finally secured the bid to run these services.

It is great to see that statutory services are seeing the benefits of preventative as well as restorative care and the important role of peer led support and recovery in the mental health system. They are recognising that mental healthcare is not 'one size fits' and due to the complex nature of everyone's mental health treatment and prevention varies from person to person.

Will be good to see once it is up and running!

If this was my last day alive, I would like to speak to opposition leader Ed Miliband. I would say the key policies on which he can work in future to make the UK one of the most prosperous nation in the world.

I'm with you on that one Tracey, fresh "clean foods" are so welcome after the feasting.

I think all of us have food associations. You are spot on recognising your earlier emotional responses to food and your eating habits. In my family we ate very quickly at breakfast, lunch and tea times. It always seemed to be a bit of a rush. Rushing to get out of the door for school/work or rushing to finish to watch tea that favourite programme on the TV.

When I work with clients in my motivational Hypnotherapy practice I help clients to unravel their own family food associations that are not helpful to them in keeping the weight off. It is almost like we wipe the slate clean and establish new healthier beneficial eating patterns.
A successful technique is to practice " food mindfulness". Before starting to eat, focus on the food before you, like we used to at school , give thanks and place your awareness on the food. Thank the elements, the rain, the sun, thank the farmers, be aware how the food has got to your table, the miles it may have traveled. Also place your awareness on the preparation, the time and the energy. Then eat slowly, chewing your food with awareness extracting all of the delicious taste, helping your gastric juices to help break down the food.

We are currently living in a fast food culture and frequently encouraged to grab a sandwich, whilst on the hoof. It is a well known fact that our bodies given the opportunity to digest and break down the food absorb the nutrients required which gives us more energy and helps us to feel less bloated and over weight.. When we are more aware of our food we feel fuller quicker and therefore eat less. We recognise those foods that are good for us and those that make us feel uncomfortable.

I believe, there are other ways to get rid off stress and headache. The subject line promotes that sex and food can be useful for handling stress. I think it depends upon occassions and type of stress. Sometimes, one have stress which can't be released with the help of sex and food. I can give lots of many examples of such stresses...

I hope you understand my point of view.

Richard thanks for the comment. I could not find many mentions of Durlak's research and none of it being discredited - can you point me in the right direction. I had a quick look on that well known research journal wikipaedia which gave some interesting background on outcome studies namely

"In 2001, Bruce Wampold of the University of Wisconsin published the book The Great Psychotherapy Debate.[30] In it Wampold, a former statistician who went on to train as a counseling psychologist, reported that

psychotherapy is indeed effective,
the type of treatment is not a factor,
the theoretical bases of the techniques used, and the strictness of adherence to those techniques are both not factors,
the therapist's strength of belief in the efficacy of the technique is a factor,
the personality of the therapist is a significant factor,
the alliance between the patient(s) and the therapist (meaning affectionate and trusting feelings toward the therapist, motivation and collaboration of the client, and empathic response of the therapist) is a key factor. "

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychotherapy for references.

The last comment would seem to support Durlak's thougths that well intentioned amateurs are as good as professions! I await with interest your responses!

Thanks for your comment Alan.

Durlak's study has been somewhat criticised over the years and from what I read has been largely disproven by subsequent studies.

What’s more, ‘therapy’ has come a long way since the 1970’s. We have seen some very interesting approaches developed in recent years such as MBCT and CBT amongst others.

I guess that this modern shift also makes Durlak’s research outdated.
